Womby the Hand Crocheted Tassie Wombat (with carers sheet)

Womby is our Tasmanian Wombat hand crocheted toy approx 14cms long.

• I was hand-crocheted by Zoey in a small town in Tasmania.
• It took Zoey about 4 hours to make me, so I have a bit of love and a lot of attention in every single stitch.
• I am a Common Wombat, also known as the Bare-Nosed Wombat.
• I’m the largest burrowing herbivorous mammal.
• My closest relative is the Koala.
• I am solidly built with a squat, round, bearlike body, small ears and eyes, and a large naked nose.
• My thick, coarse fur varies in colour from sandy brown to grey and black and is sometimes flecked with fawn.
• With my short tail and legs, I am known for my waddle.
• Due to my 'cuddly' appearance, I’m also known as the most endearing of Australia's native animals. I’m just sooo cute!
• Us Tassie wombats are smaller than our mainland relatives. We average 85 cm in length and 20 kg in weight.
• I have short legs, large paws and long, strong claws which are awesome for digging holes to sleep in.
• I use my front paws for digging. After pushing the dirt to one side, I back out, moving the loose dirt with both my front and back paws.
• I’m different to all other marsupials by having just one pair of upper and lower front teeth. These teeth never ground away as they are both rootless and never stop growing.
• My lady friends have a pouch that opens backward to prevent dirt and debris from entering while burrowing.
• They also have two teats in their pouch, yet, 30 days after mating, only one baby is born. The baby remains in the pouch for six months and stays with it Mumma until it is 18 months old.
• I’m a vegan! My diet is composed entirely of plant material. l mostly eat native grasses but shrubs, roots, bark and herbs. Moss is my favourite delicacy.
